  • Way out west for a beer tour

Matthew from Atlanta, Georgia is in San Diego on a beer tour. He’s also a Lost Abbey Patron Sinner and Saint (conflicted?), so we’re going to show him a good time.

    Quinault Rainforest

    August 29th, 2008

Since I keep talking about the rainforest, here’s a pic for you.  It was wonderful, wet, and a bit muddy.  Thank God for raingear and waterproof hiking boots!

    They’ve got Deschutes!

    August 29th, 2008

Wow, maybe this place isn’t as rustic as I originally thought.  They’ve got Deschutes!  Black Butte Porter in the bottle and Mirror Pond Pale Ale on tap.

    Lake Quinault Lodge

    August 29th, 2008

So I’ve been driving in my rental car for almost 3 hours and am now at my destination, Lake Quinault Lodge in the Olympic National Forest (a northwestern rain forest).  This lodge has been featured on the PBS Lodges of America special (the whole reason I was coerced into visiting by my SO) and is supposed to be wonderful.  While the lodge has some charm, be aware it is RUSTIC and it is in a rainforest.  Bring rain gear, your manhood, and maybe some bug spray.

    Washington Coast

While there’s no beer in this shot, take a look at the ocean and shore, what a view.

    Coming to America

    August 29th, 2008

So, the time in Victoria is done and now on the way back to the States on the ferry from Victoria, BC to Port Angeles.  Here’s your correspondent with the Washington coast in the background.  Whe aksed what I had to declare upon arrival, I said glad to be back and I’ve got a couple of beers in my backpack.

    Sucking oysters and sipping stout

    August 29th, 2008

Here’s your foreign correspondent sucking down some oysters and chasing them with a Keeper’s Stout.  Mmm…mmm…good!

Finally, a non-touristy place for a pint or two

    August 29th, 2008

Today, I’m headed to Ferris’ Oyster Bar.  It’s a local hangout that Alana told me about, with good beers, great oysters, and a non-touristy atmosphere.  I can’t say enough good things about the waitresses and bartenders here.  The service level is great, the tattoos are interesting, and eclectic factor makes this place a 10 on the local spot scale.  I started with a Phillip’s Cream Ale, there’s a Keeper’s Stout on the right for a follow-up.  I think I like the Phillip’s folks.
